You have a Word document — a report, a form, a manual, a template — and you need people to access it by scanning a QR code. The QR can either open the document in a browser or trigger a download.
Step by Step
1. Host the file online
A QR code encodes a URL, so your Word document needs to be accessible online.
Google Drive:
1. Upload the .docx file to Google Drive
2. Right-click → Share → "Anyone with the link" → Viewer
3. Copy the link
When scanned, Google Drive opens a preview of the Word document in the browser. The viewer can download from there.
Dropbox:
1. Upload the file
2. Share → Copy link
3. Change dl=0 to dl=1 in the URL for direct download
OneDrive:
1. Upload → Share → "Anyone with the link"
2. Copy the link
Your website:
Upload to your server and use the direct URL: yoursite.com/files/report.docx
2. Create the QR code
- Go to qree.app
- Paste the file URL
- Download
3. Test
Scan the QR on a phone. Confirm the document opens or downloads correctly on both iPhone and Android.
Consider PDF Instead
Word documents don't always display well on phones. Formatting breaks, fonts change, and some phones don't have a Word viewer. PDF is universally viewable on every device.
If the document doesn't need to be editable by the recipient, convert to PDF first (in Word: File → Save As → PDF), host the PDF, and create the QR for that. See our QR code for PDF guide.
If the document must be editable (a template, a form), keep it as .docx but note that the experience is less smooth on mobile.
Use Cases
Printed manuals. A QR in the printed manual linking to the digital version. "Need to search? Download the digital manual."
Forms. A QR on a poster linking to a fillable Word form. HR offices, government services, medical practices.
Templates. A QR on a flyer: "Download our business plan template" or "Download the event planning checklist."
Training materials. A QR in a training room linking to the course workbook.
Contracts and agreements. A QR on a cover page linking to the latest version of the document. Useful when printed contracts reference digital appendices.
Tips
File size matters. Large Word files (10MB+) are slow to download on mobile data. Compress images in the document before hosting.
Dynamic QR for versioned documents. When you update the document (v2, v3), a dynamic QR lets you swap the file URL without reprinting the QR.
Name the file clearly. annual-report-2026.docx is better than Document1.docx. The recipient sees the filename when downloading.
See our QR code for file download guide for more details on hosting and downloading files via QR.
